Cycling the Turin hills: five routes from Pino Torinese

1. Superga from the Pino side (easy, 15–20 km)

From Pino Torinese take the panoramic ridge road towards the Basilica of Superga: gentle gradients, flat sections, and alternating views over Turin and the Chieri plain. Stop at the viewpoint by the basilica, then return the same way, or drop down to Sassi if you want to extend the ride and climb back from the city. The perfect early-morning loop before breakfast.

2. The classic Superga climb from Sassi (hard, 25–30 km)

Descend from Pino into Turin, then tackle the benchmark climb: from the Sassi bridge to the basilica is about 5 kilometres averaging close to 9%, with ramps above 12% in the middle. This is where Turin cyclists measure their form, often repeating it several times. Return to Pino along the ridge. Bring easy gears.

3. The panoramic ridge road and Colle della Maddalena (medium, 35–45 km)

From Superga the ridge continues south: the strada dei colli passes Colle della Maddalena (715 metres, the highest point of the Turin hills), with the Parco della Rimembranza and the Faro della Vittoria, dedicated to the city's Great War dead. From there descend towards Moncalieri or Cavoretto and return along the Po to Sassi, or come back along the ridge. Constant ups and downs, moderate traffic on weekdays.

4. The Chieri loop (medium, 50–60 km)

Eastwards the hill drops towards Chieri and its hamlets: Baldissero, Pavarolo, Montaldo, Sciolze, Cinzano. Back roads between Freisa vineyards and hazelnut groves, villages with a square and a bar, few cars. It works on gravel too, using the dirt tracks that link the hamlets. Return to Pino from Chieri on the provincial road up the hill, short and steady.

5. The Langhe in a day (long, 120–150 km, or with car support)

For strong riders: Pino, Chieri, Villanova d'Asti, Alba, then the Barolo hills (La Morra, Barolo, Monforte) and back. Or drive to Alba (about forty minutes, bike in the boot or on the rack) and ride the Langhe without the transfer. The B&B car park also takes vans fitted out for bikes.

When is the best time to ride the Turin hills?

March to November; spring mornings and October afternoons are the best of it. In summer leave early, not least because the Superga road fills with cars at weekends. In winter the hill is often above the fog on the plain, which is a considerable advantage.
