Superga at sunset: the best viewpoints on the Turin hill

1. The forecourt of the Basilica of Superga

The classic: the Basilica terrace faces west, towards the city and the Alps, right where the sun sets. A balustrade, room to sit, the outline of the Mole below. On fine evenings, especially at weekends, it gets busy: arrive half an hour early. Drive up the Strada di Superga, walk up Trail 27 from Sassi, or take the rack tramway, checking the time of the last run if you want to come down after dark.

2. The Pino–Superga ridge road

The ridge road between Pino Torinese and Superga has lay-bys and picnic areas that open now onto the city side, now onto the Chierese and the Langhe. It is the place for a sunset without crowds, perhaps with a blanket and something to drink. It is the closest to the B&B: the start is in Pino, a few minutes away.

3. The Colle della Maddalena and the Faro della Vittoria

In the Parco della Rimembranza, on the highest point of the hill, the Faro della Vittoria lighthouse stands above a meadow with a wide view of the city and the mountains. Less known to visitors than Superga, it is popular with locals on summer evenings. A quarter of an hour's drive from Pino.

4. The Monte dei Cappuccini

In town, on the right bank of the Po, the terrace of the church of Santa Maria al Monte is the viewpoint closest to the centre: the Mole, Piazza Vittorio and the Alps in one frame. A few minutes' climb on foot from the Gran Madre. Ideal if the sunset is the start of an evening in the centre.

When to go and what to bring?

Season. In autumn and winter visibility is better and the sun sets early, so you are down in time for dinner; in summer the light lasts but haze often hides the mountains.

Weather. Days after wind or rain are the clearest. When fog lies on the plain, the hill sometimes stays above the clouds: a sight worth the climb.

In your bag. A warm layer even in spring, because up here the air cools quickly after sunset, and a torch if you are walking.
