Dog walks near Turin: 5 routes on the Superga hill

Are dogs allowed in the Superga Hill Park?

Yes. The Superga Hill Natural Park, established in 1991 and now part of the Po Piemontese protected areas, is open to dogs on its trails, on a lead as in every protected area in Piedmont; in picnic areas and on the Basilica forecourt the rule matters all the more, with families and other animals around. The Park is a protected area, so there is no hunting; outside its boundaries, from September to January, the hunting season is open and it is wise to stay on the marked routes. Roe deer and foxes are common in the early morning: one more reason for the lead.

1. The Pino–Superga ridge road

The easiest walk, and the best for older or less fit dogs. The Panoramica, opened in 1964 and closed to motorcycles for years, runs along the crest between Pino Torinese and the Basilica: wide asphalt, little traffic, picnic areas with tables and a fountain at the Monte Aman area. Start at the Pino end, where there is also a public water point, and walk as far as you like: the Basilica is about 8 kilometres away, but the first three already give you the views over the Alps and the Chieri plain. Return the same way.

2. The Planet Trail, from the Planetarium to Superga

The themed route opened in 2025 lays out the Solar System to scale along 8.6 kilometres of the Grande Traversata della Collina: from the Pino Torinese Planetarium, starting at the Kuiper Belt, you climb through the woods to the Sun on the Basilica forecourt, meeting the planets one by one. Gentle gradients, earth and leaves underfoot, rest areas: for the dog it is a long walk in the woods with plenty to sniff; for the human, a scientific excuse. About 400 metres of ascent; bar and restaurant at the top. A temporary detour is signed between Jupiter and Saturn: check the notices before you go.

3. From Valle Miglioretti to Monte Cervet

The Chieri side of the hill is the wildest: from Valle Miglioretti, a few minutes from the B&B, the aqueduct trail climbs the little valley and then the Bric Barletta ridge to a grassy balcony over the Chieri plain and the Maritime Alps, then on to Monte Cervet (about 568 metres). Waymarks 43 and 44, clay ground that turns slippery after rain, downy oak woods. There and back to the Cervet is about 6 kilometres and 300 metres of ascent, a couple of hours with stops; if you want more, continue along the Grande Traversata to Superga.

4. The Parco della Rimembranza at the Colle della Maddalena

On the Turin side of the hill, a quarter of an hour's drive from Pino, the Parco della Rimembranza is the great memorial wood on the Colle della Maddalena, the highest point of the Turin hill (715 metres), with the Faro della Vittoria and thousands of trees planted in memory of the fallen of the First World War. Wide avenues, clearings, benches and views over the city and the Alps: a walk of an hour or two, comfortable even for city dogs. Busy on sunny weekends; almost empty on weekdays.

5. Trail 27 from Sassi to Superga, back by rack tramway

The Turin classic: from Sassi station you climb through the woods along trail 27 to the Basilica, about 5 kilometres and over 400 metres of ascent, and come down on the rack tramway. On GTT vehicles animals travel on a lead with a muzzle or in a carrier; the tramway is closed on Wednesdays and tickets are sold at the station. For a fit dog it is the most complete outing: a climb in the woods, a break on the forecourt at 672 metres, a scenic descent on the rails.

What to bring and what to watch for

Water. Fountains are few and far apart: Monte Aman, "i turet" below Bric del Duca, the water point at the Pino end of the Panoramica. A bottle and a folding bowl solve it.

Ticks. From March to October, in tall grass and undergrowth: check on your return and keep the parasite treatment up to date.

Ground and seasons. The hill's clay turns to soap after rain; in summer you walk in the woods but it pays to start early. In autumn the chestnuts attract dogs too.

Muzzle. You must carry one in public places and it is required on public transport. On the trails, in practice, the lead is enough.
