Can you take a dog to the Stupinigi park?
Yes, as long as it is on a lead: the Parchi Reali authority that runs the park confirms it. Around the Stupinigi hunting lodge stretch fields, woods and straight avenues, flat and suitable for any dog. Entry is free, bikes included; motor vehicles are banned. There is free parking along Viale Torino or beside provincial road 143 towards Orbassano; by bus, line 41 stops near the lodge. The lodge itself has an entry ticket: check opening times and whether animals are admitted inside on the website of the Ordine Mauriziano, which runs it.
Are dogs allowed at the Avigliana lakes?
Yes. In the Avigliana Lakes Nature Park, at the mouth of the Susa Valley, dogs are allowed but may not be let off the lead. The trails around the Lago Grande and the Lago Piccolo are easy and mostly flat, with wetlands and reed beds full of birds: another reason to keep your dog close. Swimming is banned in the Lago Piccolo and in the wildlife protection zones, for those hoping for a dip with the dog.
Why is La Mandria closed to dogs?
The fenced area of La Mandria park in Venaria is a large historic enclosure with red deer, fallow deer and wild boar roaming free: to protect them, and to avoid passing diseases and parasites between pets and wildlife, dogs and other pets are not allowed in. The other Parchi Reali reserves, such as Stupinigi, are open to dogs on a lead.
The Superga hill: the nearest outing
If you stay on the hill, the easiest outing needs no car: the Pino–Superga ridge road and the trails towards Valle Miglioretti and Monte Aman start near the B&B. The Superga Hill Park is a protected area, so leads here too, but the chestnut woods are shady and quiet. Our five favourite walks are in a dedicated guide.
What to bring on a day out with a dog?
Water and a bowl: fountains are few in the parks. A short lead for stretches with wildlife or people, and a muzzle to carry in public places and on transport. Parasite treatment: from March to October ticks are common in tall grass, so check on your return. Bags for droppings, always.
