Travelling with a dog in Turin: parks, trails, rules and where to stay pet friendly

Where can you take a dog in Turin?

Parco del Valentino. The historic park on the Po, with avenues, lawns and a view of the hills: a long walk on the lead along the paths and the river.

Parco della Pellerina, Parco Dora, Parco Colletta. The big urban parks, with off-lead areas and room to run. Parco Colletta, where the Po meets the Stura, is a favourite among dog owners.

Lungo Po and the Murazzi. The riverside walk from the Murazzi to the Valentino, quiet in the early morning.

The Superga hills. The real luxury for a dog: the trails of the Superga Hill Park between Pino Torinese and the basilica, through chestnut woods, where in quiet hours you walk for a long time without meeting anyone. From Paradise you set off on foot.

Are dogs allowed on public transport in Turin?

Yes, and free of charge. GTT rules allow animals on buses, trams and the metro provided they are neither a nuisance nor a danger, and are kept on a lead with a muzzle or in a carrier; the owner is liable for any damage and must clean up after the animal. Bus 30 links Pino Torinese with the centre.

Do Turin museums accept dogs?

It depends on the museum. At the Palace of Venaria dogs of any size are allowed in the gardens on a lead, and small ones indoors in a carrier or bag; the La Mandria park does not admit them. The Royal Museums apply a similar rule (gardens for all, indoor rooms for small dogs). The Egyptian Museum admits assistance dogs only. Rules change, so a phone call before the visit avoids surprises. On café and restaurant terraces dogs are almost always welcome; indoors it depends on the place. Turin is a city of outdoor tables, which helps.

What do you need to travel with a dog in Italy?

A microchip, a health record or European pet passport with a valid rabies vaccination if you come from abroad, a lead and a muzzle to carry with you (you must have one in public places, though the dog need not wear it). It is worth saving the number of a local vet before you leave: there are several between Pino Torinese and Chieri.
