How do Turin's dog areas work?
There are dozens, spread across every district, run partly by the districts and partly by the city's Parks department. They are not all alike: size and facilities vary, and some are split into two or three sections to keep small dogs apart from large ones. The full list with addresses and sizes is published by the City of Turin on its "Aree cani" page. Entry is free.
Where are the biggest dog areas?
Parco della Pellerina, the largest city park, on the west side: home to Turin's biggest dog area, 12,700 square metres, with avenues and lawns around it for on-lead walks.
Parco Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto (Piazza d'Armi), on Corso Galileo Ferraris: an area of about 4,000 square metres in the park between Crocetta and Santa Rita.
Parco Rignon, at Corso Orbassano 200, and Parco Pietro Mennea, entered from Piazza Marmolada: areas of about a thousand square metres, handy in the south of the city.
For the one nearest to where you are staying, check the city's list: almost every neighbourhood has at least one.
What rules apply in dog areas?
The dog goes in under the responsibility of whoever is with it, who must be able to call it back and keep it under control. Droppings are always picked up, inside and outside the area, as the city's animal welfare regulations require. It is good practice not to bring food or prized toys in when other dogs are around, and to use the small-dog section where there is one.
And on the hill?
In the Superga Hill Nature Park dogs must be on a lead, as in all Piedmont's protected areas, but the woodland trails are long, shady and quiet: for many dogs they beat a fenced area in town. Our five favourite walks are collected in a dedicated guide.
